Useful Dana Items
Birken is supported solely through the ancient tradition of Dana, or generous giving. Monetary gifts are always acceptable, and are the most flexible and readily usable dana.
For those who would like to donate specific goods rather than money, here is a current list of useful items:
- Unsalted nuts, other than peanuts & almonds (not trail mix)
- Dried fruit: cranberries, apricots, prunes, pineapple, mango, papaya, etc.
- Fresh fruit other than apples, oranges, bananas
- Salad dressing in sealed bottles (other than oil-and-vinegar types)
- Juices: (not "drink") in 1 litre tetra paks or plastic bottles
- Jam (500 ml or smaller)
Also Note:
- Please do not bring large amounts of foods that need refrigeration or freezing; our fridge and freezer space is limited.
- Non-perishable food items are ideal.
- On arrival, dana items can be given to a Steward, or brought to the kitchen area.
- Please label homemade items such as jam with date made, expiry date, and main ingredients.
- You may also personally offer prepared food to the monks for the daily meal.
- Preparation of a whole meal is always welcome; arrange a date in advance, and we will give you an approximate headcount a week before your planned dana day.
- You can use our kitchen, or bring the meal ready to heat & serve.
- Preparation of a dish using our kitchen is usually welcome; check with kitchen stewards to coordinate with their plans & needs.
- A main dish to serve a substantial number of people, that can be reheated quickly. Many commercially prepared items require more than 1 ½ hour preparation starting from a cold oven; this does not fit into our meal preparation schedule. Read the instructions carefully.
