Food

  • You may drink water at any time and have a bottle of water in your quarters. Other drinks may only be consumed on the dining area or outside.

  • There are two times during the day when solid food is eaten. This is the light morning breakfast (7 am) and the main meal (most of the year at 11 am). No solid food is eaten at tea-time (4:30 pm).

  • The Abbot needs to be informed of medical dietary requirements. Special foods or supplements may be kept in the food storage area - please ask the kitchen steward. Limited monastery facilities do not permit us to accommodate all special requirements.

  • Unless otherwise noted, meal preparation is carried out by designated kitchen staff. Guests may volunteer to help with clean-up after breakfast, main meal, and tea-time.

  • The monastics may not touch food until it is formally offered to them. The Steward at the monastery will be happy to show you how this is done.

  • The main meal is considered a formal occasion and is taken in silence. Breakfast is considered an informal meal and is an opportunity to engage in quiet conversation.
