Announcing the Rebirth of our Haritayana (‘Green Vehicle’) Fund
Three years ago we launched our Haritayana (‘Green Vehicle’) fund with the intention of purchasing a new hybrid vehicle (‘yana’) for the monastery. At that time our green choices were limited so we ended up buying a traditional gas powered SUV to tide us over. With the aging of our 2005 Sienna van we have decided now is the time (and the auto market agrees) to make the move to a greener vehicle.
Meet our new PHEyana
We researched many replacement options from the perspectives of cost, passenger and cargo space, suitability for our rugged road conditions, and moving towards our goal of all PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) and/or all electric vehicles within the next five years.
After weighing all of these variables we have selected the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, our first pick three years ago, which at that time was not readily available in Canada. It is a 5 passenger, AWD SUV with a range of about 35km on a full charge (and with regenerative braking we can get to Kamloops with plenty of battery storage to spare), plus it’s currently the only PHEV on the market that allows DC quick charging, providing up to 80% of a full charge in about 20 minutes.
If you would like to contribute towards this purchase, and future electric vehicle purchases, please indicate “Green Vehicle” on your donations at our Support page or when visiting the monastery.
Anumodana! We rejoice in your generosity and great merit.
